How to start sailing
How to start sailing: Your first step toward freedom
Always dreamed of sailing, but don’t know how to start? Maybe seems complicated, expensive or reserved for “those others”. Sailing community is sociable and can’t wait for new adventurers to talk to for days. Two hours on boat with experienced sailor are worth more than month of reading. You’ll feel whether you like it without any obligation.
Sailing is today more accessible and available than ever, and path to deck is simpler than you think.
First step: Stop with theory, go on water
Biggest mistake is postponing. Books and VR tutorials can’t replace feeling of wind in sails. Your first station should be:
Socializing: Sailors are sociable crew and gladly love to share their passion. Now you have no reason to fear you don’t know anyone.
Second step: Formal learning
When you fall in love, time is for practical knowledge. You never need to buy boat to sail!
• Take course. Beginner course covers safety basics, handling and maneuvering.
• What do you get? Not just knowledge, but also ticket to nautical world and countless acquaintances from whole world with whom you maybe even sail around planet.
Third step: Gain experience – become “crew”
After training, most important part follows:
• Sail as much as possible: You’ll meet many people you can sail with.
• Charter: With some experience, you can charter boat with captain for family vacation. Learn during trip.
Fourth step: Be realistic (and patient)
• Don’t start alone with boat purchase. Start with sailing school. Sail with more experienced. Learn. Start in light, sheltered waters. Over time you’ll gain both knowledge and, more importantly, feeling for what sea says. Then you’ll be able to enjoy endless beauty of sailing with peaceful soul and secure heart.
• Accept you’ll make mistakes: That’s part of process. Good instructor creates safe environment for learning.
• Enjoy process: Sailing isn’t just goal (to operate boat), but also journey – gaining friends, stories and self-confidence.
Awaits you something prettier than sport – feeling of true freedom only wind in sails can provide. Come on, time to set sail!
