What to take for sailing?
Packing for first sail can be confusing. Everything depends on what period you sail. Since we assume you’ll go in summer we’ll focus on summer clothing.
What really needs to go in the bag, and what will just take up space in the cabin? Key is in layers, protection, and reality. This list will keep you comfortable and safe, without overloading.<\/p>

  1. Clothing by “layers” principle.
    At sea temperature and conditions change.
    \u2022 Base layer (moisture-wicking): Quick-dry underwear, T-shirt, and shorts.
    \u2022 Middle layer (warmth): Fleece or something like that for insulation.
    \u2022 Outer layer (protection): Waterproof windbreaker is good to have at hand
    Waves and spray sometimes accompany us.
    \u2022 For head and hands: Cap (so it doesn’t fly away), sun hat, sunglasses with polarized lenses (reduce glare and see shallows!) and thin waterproof gloves.<\/li>
  2. Footwear is critical
    \u2022 On deck: Shoes with non-marking soles (mostly white \u2013 avoid black). Sports shoes that don’t slip on wet surface. Boat shoes\/sneakers are ideal, but not essential for 7 days on boat.
    \u2022 Water shoes\/reef shoes (cheap, and can be found everywhere)
    \u2022 For land: One pair of light sandals or flip-flops.<\/li>
  3. Personal gear: Small, but powerful
    \u2022 Sun protection: Cream with high SPF (50+), as waterproof as possible. Reapply every few hours.
    \u2022 Personal pharmacy: Medications you regularly take, motion sickness medicine (if prone), band-aids. Always inform skipper about health problems.
    \u2022 Bag, not suitcase! Soft, portable sports bag is perfect because it can be easily stowed in locker. Hard suitcase damages boat interior and takes up space.
    \u2022 Charger and power bank: Outlets are always too few, like at home. Power bank is salvation.<\/li>
  4. What to leave at home
    \u2022 Expensive, elegant clothes and shoes: Space is limited, and atmosphere relaxed.
    \u2022 Too many things. Rule: Pack all you think you need, then leave half. On boat you’ll live in maximum two clothing combinations.
    Most important item: Attitude
    Bring flexibility and willingness for teamwork. Sailing is social activity where all help. Pack smile and curiosity. That doesn’t take space in bag, but makes journey unforgettable.
