5 things NOBODY says before first sailing

5 things NOBODY says before first sailing (but should!)
You prepare for first sailing. You listen to advice about life jackets, cream and what to pack. But some of most important details – those that make difference between good and perfect experience – often remain unspoken. Here’s what more experienced sailors really want you to know.

  1. “Seasickness is optional – there’s key to it.”
All fear nausea, and nobody mentions how easy it is to avoid. First of 10 people who say they have nausea in practice showed that actually only 1 suffers from irritated middle ear. Because it’s not that rocking people think. And that 1 can be fixed with preventive taking of motion sickness medicine hour before departure, not when you feel first symptoms. Stay on deck, look at horizon, avoid reading in cabin. And most important – have task! When you’re engaged in some task, brain focuses on that, not on discord.
  2. “Nobody has right to annoy you – learn to say ‘NO’.”
Believe it or not, atmosphere on boat is only as annoying as you allow. You don’t have to accept someone constantly telling stories you’re not interested in, teaching, criticizing… Sailing is team sport, and in good team mutual respect rules. If something doesn’t suit you, nicely and clearly communicate. Real captain will understand and redirect dynamic.
  3. “Boat doesn’t sail at night? Mistake – it’s most beautiful.”
Many think sailing ends at sunset, because boat doesn’t sail at night. However, if conditions are safe, night sailing is magical experience. Sky full of stars, phosphorescence in water that lights up at bow, perfect silence except wave rustle. That’s moment of absolute connection with sea that doesn’t exist daytime. Just trust lights on shore and experienced captain.
  4. “You’ll sleep like baby – because of sea’s rhythm.”
Horrified by stories of uncomfortable bunks? Truth is different. You sleep best on boat – literally. Sometimes barely noticeable boat rocking, sound of water hitting hull and fresh sea air make most natural sleeping pill. Body surrenders to wave rhythm and suddenly you sleep deeper and better quality than ever. But really! So, don’t worry about insomnia.
  5. “You’ll swim in shallows of color you haven’t seen.”
All expect blue of open sea. But real wonder awaits when you anchor in shallow bay. There, where sun illuminates white sandy bottom, sea takes unimaginable shades – from crystal clear sparkling, to electric turquoise and mischievous green. Swimming in such shallows is like diving into aquamarine necklace. That’s magic pictures can’t convey. Of everything you see in pictures live is at least 3 times prettier.

Now you know. First sailing isn’t just testing strength, but opening door to new sensations. Bring this knowledge, and you’ll experience more than ordinary vacation – you’ll experience true heart beating for sea.
