Catamaran or sailboat? Proper choice depends on your sea
One of the most beautiful dilemmas in sailing world: choose classic sailboat (monohull) or modern catamaran? Equally exist 3 groups of people. Those inclined to one or the other type and those who enjoy on both. Like choosing between sports car and spacious SUV on water. Answer has nothing to do with “better”, and everything with your way of sailing and priorities.

Sailboat: Respect for tradition and connection with sea

Sailboat is classic, elegant choice. It heels (but that’s probably what makes it safest vessel), which is less pleasant for some, for others represents essence of sailing – that feeling of direct connection with force of wind and waves.
• Advantages: Usually cheaper to rent and purchase and maintain than catamaran of similar length. Easier to dock in full marina, because narrower. Provides authentic, sporty sailing feel and advances better upwind.
• Disadvantages: Living space is smaller, but not something decisive.

Catamaran: Space, stability and panoramic views

Catamaran is wide and stable. Doesn’t heel much, but lifts slightly to wind. That’s its main advantage. In theory could capsize, but extreme conditions are needed for that.
• Advantages: Incredibly spacious. Wide salon, spacious and level cockpit, often four separate cabins with own bathrooms. Ideal for socializing, families and long cruises. In marina creates terrace at sea level. Stability makes cooking, and moving incomparably easier.

• Disadvantages: Significantly more expensive (purchase, double berth space, double engines and double bottom cleaning). Its width can be problem in narrow marinas and harbors. Sails differently – less “feels” wind, and maneuvering under engine in tight spaces requires attention.
What about sailing?
Here is key difference. Sailboat cuts through waves, passing through them, which can be softer on rough sea. Catamaran climbs over waves, which can result in sharper movements on short, broken waves. For long ocean crossings, catamaran stability is incomparable.

So, how to decide?
Choose SAILBOAT if:
• You like classic, sporty sailing feel.
• Your budget is limited.
• You often sail only with partner or one friend.
• Appreciate aesthetics and tradition and want to feel every gust of wind.

Choose CATAMARAN if:
• Space and comfort are your priority (family, cruising with friends).
• You want stability without heeling for relaxing, eating and sleeping.
• You’re often in marina and want “floating weekend house” with terrace.
• Your budget allows it.

Best advice? Charter and try both types! Today on charter market you can easily spend week on one and other. Your bodies and your way of enjoying will give you clearest answer. Some live for sailboat’s heel, while others would never leave catamaran’s level salon. Sea is big enough for both dreams.
